On Thursday (January 4), the Congress declared a change in the name of Rahul Gandhi’s forthcoming Bharat Nyay Yatra to Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, set to commence on January 14 from Manipur. Gandhi will spearhead the march, embarking from Imphal and concluding in Mumbai in March. Covering a total distance of 6,713 kilometers, the yatra will traverse 110 districts in both eastern and western India over the course of 66 days.

Members of the INDIA alliance have also been invited to join the yatra.

According to a map released by the party, the yatra will cover the states of Manipur, Nagaland, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.

The yatra will cover 100 Lok Sabha seats and 337 assembly seats. The longest leg of the yatra will be in Uttar Pradesh where 11 days have been allotted to cover 20 districts in the state.

Explaining why the yatra name was tweaked, Jairam Ramesh, Congress communications chief said, “The idea of justice is the idea of the yatra. We had a Bharat Jodo Yatra for 140 days, it proved to be a transformative movement in Indian politics, everybody was of the unanimous view that we should combine the two and that is why the yatra is now called Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.”

Unlike the Bharat Jodo Yatra, there will not be a permanent group of Congress workers and leaders marching with Rahul and there will be fewer container vans for the yatris to spend the night in. The yatris will walk 8-9 km every day and about 80 km will be covered by bus. Rahul is also scheduled to deliver two speeches each day.
