Disease X : WHO warns of potential pandemic 20 times deadlier than COVID-19

In a stark warning, the World Health Organization (WHO) has raised concerns about a theoretical virus known as ‘Disease X’ which scientists suggest could be 20 times more lethal than COVID-19. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director General of WHO, urged nations to endorse a pandemic treaty to prepare for the potential threat of Disease X.

“It’s better to anticipate something that may happen because it has happened in our history many times and prepare for it. We should not face things unprepared; we can prepare for some unknown things, as well.”

Ghebreyesus emphasized the importance of readiness for future pandemics, citing COVID-19 as the initial instance of Disease X. The WHO adopted the placeholder name in 2018, ensuring flexibility in planning for unknown pathogens. 

Experts emphasize the need for global cooperation to strengthen surveillance, develop vaccines, and enhance preparedness to mitigate the potentially catastrophic consequences of Disease X.
