On December 31 last year, some postgraduate students from BJ Medical College caused a disturbance after having a party in the male residents’ hostel where they allegedly drank alcohol. They later moved to the female residents’ hostel, broke doors and windows, and created a panic. Two female residents reported the chaos to the college authorities.

The college investigated the incident and originally decided to cancel one academic term for the ten involved resident doctors, which included nine junior residents and one senior resident pursuing orthopaedics and medicine. They were also to be expelled from their hostel for six months and fined ₹300. This punishment was approved by the medical education department on April 19.

However, the doctors admitted their mistakes and asked the Director of Medical Education and Research (DMER), Dr Dilip Mhaisekar, to reconsider the severe punishment. Dr. Mhaisekar decided to cancel the term cancellation, citing the long-term negative effects it could have on the doctors’ careers. “We directed the BJMC dean to revoke the action of one academic term cancellation. However, the action for expulsion from the hostel for six months with a fine of ₹300 will continue to remain,” he explained.

To prevent future incidents, the involved doctors must now sign an agreement promising not to repeat such behaviour. Dr Mhaisekar emphasized the decision was made on humanitarian grounds, considering the impact on the doctors’ future careers.
