On Tuesday night, traffic on the Vijapur-Guhagar highway in Satara came to a standstill as a young woman, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, caused a major disturbance in Vijaynagar village, Karad Taluka. Eyewitnesses said she blocked vehicles traveling in both directions, shouted loudly, and drew the attention of passing commuters with her erratic behavior.

The woman escalated the situation by climbing onto the bonnets of cars and tractors, performing stunts while singing loudly and using profanities. This section of the highway, considered a key gateway to the Konkan region, sees heavy traffic daily, including frequent movement of large tankers from Lote MIDC in Chiplun, making such incidents extremely dangerous.

The incident reached its peak at the MSEB square in Vijaynagar, where she continued standing in the middle of the road, obstructing traffic. Attempts by locals to inform the police failed initially, as the city police station’s telephone line was reportedly down. The disruption lasted for about half an hour until some local women intervened, moving her off the road. At the time, she was carrying a plastic bag and an odhani (scarf).

The event drew a large crowd at MSEB square, with several bystanders recording videos of her stunts and shouting. These videos quickly went viral on social media.

The episode also highlights broader concerns along the Karad-Chiplun corridor, where a rapid increase in hotels, dhabas, beer bars, and lodges has reportedly contributed to reckless and unlawful activities.

Observers have criticized local authorities for ignoring these operations, allowing illegal businesses to flourish. Reports of irregularities in lodges and other establishments further underline the lack of oversight.
