Pune: In a major step towards streamlining blood availability, the central government has launched the E-Raktkosh portal, allowing patients to access real-time blood stock information with just a click on their mobile phones. The initiative, spearheaded by Health Minister Prakash Abitkar, aims to assist patients with conditions like Thalassemia, Hemophilia, Sickle Cell Disease, and Cancer, ensuring they do not have to struggle to find blood.

Statewide Blood Bank Network

Maharashtra has a vast network of 395 blood banks across government, semi-government, private, and trust-run centers. With the E-Raktkosh portal (www.eraktkosh.mohfw.gov.in), patients can now check live blood stock availability and locate the nearest blood banks in real-time. The portal also provides details of upcoming blood donation camps, making it easier for donors to contribute.

Boosting Blood Supply & Accessibility

The portal is particularly beneficial for patients requiring frequent blood transfusions and those undergoing major surgeries. It also helps patients with rare blood groups find available stock effortlessly. Additionally, blood donors can use the portal to locate nearby donation centers and contribute effectively.

Maharashtra Leads in Blood Donation

Maharashtra ranks first in India for blood collection, with over 21 lakh blood donors contributing last year. The collected blood is processed into packed red blood cells, platelet concentrates, and fresh frozen plasma, which are supplied as per medical needs. The State Blood Transfusion Council has set regulated processing charges, ensuring fair pricing for blood and its components.

Role of Blood Donation Camps

Blood donation camps play a crucial role, with colleges, NGOs, political parties, religious organizations, Ganesh mandals, and corporate offices actively participating. Many donors have donated over 100 times, reinforcing the belief that “Blood donation is the greatest donation.” The State Blood Transfusion Council continues to work towards maintaining a safe and sufficient blood supply at affordable rates.
