Earthquake of 5.1 Magnitude Hits Assam’s Morigaon; Mild Tremors Felt in Tripura and Nepal
Earthquake Today: Tremors of magnitude 5.1 hit Assam’s Morigaon day after quake in Nepal
A moderate earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter Scale struck Morigaon district in Assam in the early hours of Monday, January 5, causing brief tremors across parts of the region. According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the quake occurred at around 5:15 am at a depth of 50 km.
Sharing details on X, the NCS stated, “EQ of M: 5.1, On: 05/01/2026 04:17:40 IST, Lat: 26.37 N, Long: 92.29 E, Depth: 50 Km, Location: Morigaon, Assam.”
No reports of damage to property or loss of life have been received so far.
Earlier the same morning, another earthquake of magnitude 3.9 was recorded in Gomati district of Tripura at around 3:30 am. The tremors were mild and did not result in any reported casualties or damage.
Meanwhile, seismic activity was also reported in neighbouring Nepal over the weekend. An earthquake of magnitude 4.3 struck the Udayapur district in eastern Nepal on Saturday night at around 10:51 pm, with its epicentre near Bagapati, as per the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre (NEMRC). Tremors were felt in adjoining districts, though no damage was reported. Earlier on Saturday, a 4.6-magnitude quake had hit Nepal’s Taplejung district.
Nepal lies in a highly active seismic zone, making it prone to frequent earthquakes.
