FASTag Users Get Major Relief As KYV Rule Ends From February 1
New FASTags for cars, jeeps and vans will no longer require the KYV process, making toll payments faster and hassle-free for millions of highway users.
From February 1, 2026, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will implement a major change that will bring relief to millions of FASTag users across the country. The Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process, which earlier caused repeated inconvenience to vehicle owners, will no longer be mandatory while issuing new FASTags for cars, jeeps and vans.
Until now, vehicle owners had to undergo KYV verification even after activating their FASTag. This often involved uploading documents, photographs and vehicle details multiple times. Many users complained that despite submitting all required documents, their FASTags were either delayed or blocked due to technical errors or incomplete KYV status. This caused unnecessary stress, especially for people who depended on highways for daily travel.
Under the new rule, the responsibility of verification will now lie entirely with the banks issuing FASTags. Banks will complete all necessary checks before activating the FASTag, ensuring that vehicle data is accurate and verified at the source. Once the FASTag is issued, users will not have to go through KYV repeatedly.
This move is expected to make toll payment smoother and more efficient. NHAI has said the decision was taken to simplify the system and reduce delays at toll plazas. The aim is to ensure that FASTag users can travel without disruption and that toll collection remains fast and seamless.
Another important relief is for existing FASTag holders. NHAI has clarified that regular KYV will no longer be required for already issued FASTags. Earlier, many users had to re-verify their FASTags periodically, even when there were no issues with their accounts. From February 1 onward, this process will only be triggered in special cases.
KYV will now be required only if there is a complaint, discrepancy or suspected misuse of a FASTag. If no such issue is reported, users will not have to worry about repeated verification or account suspension. This change is expected to reduce unnecessary account blocks and service interruptions.
NHAI has also informed that the verification systems used by banks have been strengthened. Before issuing a FASTag, banks will now mandatorily match vehicle details with official records. This ensures that FASTags are issued only after complete and accurate validation of the vehicle’s identity.
For highway commuters, this is a significant shift. FASTag was introduced to make toll collection faster and reduce congestion at toll plazas. However, the KYV process gradually became a point of frustration due to its complexity and repeated compliance requirements. With this update, FASTag is expected to return to its original promise of convenience and speed.
The change is particularly beneficial for daily commuters, transport operators and families who frequently travel on highways. It also reduces dependency on repeated online submissions, technical platforms and manual approvals.
Officials believe this reform will enhance user confidence in the FASTag system while improving overall efficiency in toll operations. The simplified process will save time, prevent errors and reduce the burden on both users and service providers.
In simple terms, new FASTag users will experience a smoother onboarding process, and existing users will no longer be troubled by routine KYV requirements. Only in rare cases of complaint or suspected misuse will additional verification be conducted.
This decision marks an important step towards making highway travel in India more user-friendly and technologically streamlined.
