FDA flags serious health risks as Friendly’s and Blue Bell pull mislabeled cartons from shelves across multiple states.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced urgent recalls of two well-known ice cream brands after packaging errors led to undeclared allergens in certain batches, posing potentially life-threatening risks for consumers with allergies.

The first recall involves Friendly’s Vanilla Bean Ice Cream (48 fl. oz. cartons), which was mistakenly filled with Cookies & Cream ice cream. The packaging failed to declare the presence of soy and wheat, two of the FDA’s nine major allergens. Officials said 324 cartons were impacted and distributed in Maryland, Virginia, and surrounding areas.

Separately, Blue Bell Creameries initiated a recall of its Moo-llennium Crunch Ice Cream in 16 states, after the product was incorrectly packaged in Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough cartons. The error left out key allergen warnings for almonds, walnuts, and pecans. The affected cartons can be identified by the lid code 061027524 printed on the top.

While no illnesses have been reported so far, experts warn that undeclared allergens can cause severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, which may be life-threatening. Blue Bell confirmed the affected products were produced at its Brenham, Texas facility and distributed in states including Texas, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Tennessee, and others.

Both companies have urged customers to return the mislabeled products to the point of purchase for a full refund. The FDA stressed that the recalls are precautionary but necessary to protect consumer safety.
