FIR Filed Against Pune Institute After Student Dies In Basketball Pole Collapse
Pimpri-Chinchwad, April 17, 2026: Police have registered a case against a maritime training institute in Pune district following the death of a 20-year-old student in an on-campus accident earlier this month.
The complaint was filed at Talegaon MIDC Police Station on April 15 by the victim’s father, a resident of Uttar Pradesh. The deceased, identified as Vishal Verma, was a second-year Marine Engineering student.
According to police officials, the incident took place on April 5 at the institute’s Induri campus in Maval taluka. The student was reportedly on the playground when a basketball pole gave way and collapsed, causing serious head injuries. He later succumbed while undergoing medical treatment.
The complaint names the institute’s principal, along with members of the sports and maintenance staff, holding them responsible for alleged negligence. The family has claimed that the structure was in poor condition and had not been properly maintained.
The incident has triggered unrest among students on campus. A video circulating on social media shows a group of students confronting a police officer, expressing anger over the handling of the case and the delay in action. The situation was later brought under control.
The victim’s family has alleged lapses in emergency response, stating that immediate medical assistance was not available at the time of the accident. They have demanded strict action against those responsible.
Originally from Ayodhya, the student was described by his family as academically bright and active in sports. Police have launched an investigation into the incident as well as the subsequent protest by students.
