Evening shoppers were left stunned after a jewellery store near Hadapsar became the target of a swift and well-planned robbery on Saturday, resulting in the loss of gold ornaments worth nearly Rs 52 lakh. The incident unfolded around 5.30 pm at a jewellery shop located in Shewalwadi, close to the busy Pune–Solapur highway. According to police, four men walked into the store posing as regular customers, while a fifth accomplice stayed outside to monitor the surroundings.
Once inside, the situation quickly turned threatening. One of the suspects allegedly brandished a billhook and warned the shop owner not to raise an alarm. Within a matter of minutes, the group scooped up gold jewellery displayed on the counters, stuffed the valuables into a bag, and rushed out of the store. The gang then escaped from the area on motorcycles.
The shop owner approached Manjari Police Station on Sunday to lodge a complaint. Based on his statement, police have registered a case of dacoity against five unidentified individuals.
Investigators are now closely examining CCTV footage from the jewellery shop as well as cameras installed in nearby areas. Efforts are underway to identify the suspects, trace their movements, and determine the registration numbers of the motorcycles used during the escape.
Senior police officials confirmed that multiple teams have been formed to track down the accused. Authorities are also probing whether the same gang could be linked to similar robbery cases reported along the highway over the past few months. As of late Sunday night, no arrests had been made. Police officials assured that the investigation is progressing on multiple fronts and expressed confidence that crucial leads from surveillance footage and local inputs will help crack the case soon.
