In a significant development, Indian bank employees may soon enjoy a five-day workweek, pending government approval by December 2024. The Indian Banks Association (IBA) and employee unions have reached a consensus on the matter, marking a major milestone in the journey towards improved work-life balance for banking professionals.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the IBA and bank unions in December 2023, encompassing both public and private sector banks. Building on this momentum, a joint note was signed on March 8, 2024, between the IBA and the All India Bank Officers Confederation, outlining the framework for the five-day workweek and weekend holidays.

If the government greenlights the proposal, bank employees will receive Saturdays and Sundays off, in exchange for an extension of daily working hours by 40 minutes. Currently, banks operate between 9:30 am and 5:30 pm in most parts of the country, but this may change to 9 am to 5:40 pm. Some branches, however, may continue to observe public hours from 10 am to 4 pm.

Customers will need to verify the working hours of their local branches once the new schedule is implemented. The banking industry eagerly awaits the government’s final decision, which could bring significant changes to the work-life balance of bank employees across India.

“The five-day workweek will greatly benefit bank employees, allowing them to recharge and improve productivity,” said a senior bank official. The proposal has generated optimism among banking professionals, who are eagerly awaiting the government’s approval.

The government’s decision is expected by December 2024. If approved, the five-day workweek will mark a significant shift in the banking sector, prioritizing employee well-being and work-life balance.
