Five Deaths Reported as Zika Virus Cases Reach 100 in Pune, Pregnant Women At Risk
The number of Zika virus cases in Pune has risen to 100, with a significant portion of the infected being pregnant women. Five deaths have been reported so far, all among senior citizens with pre-existing health conditions.
The Dahanukar Colony Ward Office area has emerged as the most affected, reporting 20 cases. Other areas hit by the virus include Erandwane (16 cases), Kharadi (13), Ghole Road and Pashan (9 each), Sukhsagar Nagar and Mundhwa (7 each), Wanwadi (5), Kalas (4), Koregaon Park and Ambegaon Budruk (3 each), Lohegaon (2), and Vishrambaug and Dhankawadi (1 each).
According to Dr. Rajesh Dighe, Assistant Medical Officer of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), 45 of the infected patients are pregnant women.
The five fatalities include a 72-year-old man from Kharadi, a 95-year-old woman from Pashan, a 78-year-old man from Baner, a 68-year-old man from Kothrud, and a 76-year-old man from Karvenagar. While Zika virus was confirmed in these patients, the exact cause of death is under investigation, with medical reports sent to the State Health Department. The department’s Death Investigation Committee will determine if Zika directly caused the deaths.
