Maharashtra Government Shifts Eid-e-Milad Public Holiday from September 16 to 18
The public holiday declared for Eid-e-Milad (Eid-e-Milad-Un-Nabi 2024) on Monday, September 16, has been canceled. The holiday has now been rescheduled to Wednesday, September 18, as per a notification issued by the General Administration Department.
Initially, the state government had listed Eid-e-Milad as a public holiday on Monday, September 16, in its official list of 24 public holidays for the year. Eid-e-Milad is a major religious festival for Muslims, during which large processions are typically held. This year, however, Anant Chaturdashi, a significant Hindu festival, falls on Tuesday, September 17. To maintain peace and social harmony between the two communities, Muslim organizations in Mumbai, Mumbai suburbs, and other districts have decided to hold their processions on Wednesday, September 18.
As a result, the government has canceled the previously declared holiday for Eid-e-Milad on Monday, September 16, in Mumbai city and its suburbs. Instead, the public holiday will now be observed on Wednesday, September 18.
In districts outside of Mumbai and its suburbs, the respective District Collectors have been given the authority to decide whether to maintain the public holiday on Monday, September 16, or reschedule it to Wednesday, September 18, based on the local Eid-e-Milad procession schedules. The government has directed them to make a decision accordingly.
