Five Foreign Universities To Set Up Campuses In Maharashtra
Mumbai, Maharashtra – In a significant move to transform Maharashtra into a global education hub, five internationally reputed foreign universities have been granted Letters of Intent (LOIs) to establish campuses in the state. The announcement was made during the ‘LOI Granting Ceremony’ held as part of the ambitious ‘Mumbai Rising – Creating an International Education City’ project. The event witnessed the presence of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Maharashtra Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil, and other dignitaries.
While addressing the gathering, the minister expressed heartfelt gratitude to the global community for their support to India and the bereaved families of the recent Ahmedabad plane crash. He also lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his visionary leadership and the transformative New Education Policy (NEP), which enabled foreign universities to establish a presence in India.
The five global universities—University of Aberdeen, University of York, University of Western Australia, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Istituto Europeo di Design (IED)—will now be part of a first-of-its-kind Educity near Navi Mumbai, well-connected to South Mumbai via the Atal Setu. Credit was given to CIDCO and the Urban Development Department for identifying the location in record time.
The Educity project will be followed by MediCity, Sports City, and an upcoming Innovation City—designed to foster next-generation technology and research. These institutions will provide top-tier, affordable education to Indian and international students alike, removing barriers to access and empowering young minds.
The event was graced by dignitaries including British High Commissioner Lindy Cameron, Italian Consul General Walter Ferrara, and U.S. Consul General Mike Hankey, among others.
With this initiative, Maharashtra is set to host one of India’s largest ecosystems of foreign universities, positioning India not just as a recipient of global education—but a co-creator of the global future.
