From College Fees To PG Rents, Pune Students Face Growing Financial Burden
Pune has always been recognised as one of India’s leading student cities, attracting thousands of students every year because of its colleges, coaching institutes, and academic opportunities. However, for many students today, pursuing education is becoming increasingly expensive. Rising tuition fees, costly coaching classes, expensive study materials, and additional academic expenses are making it harder for students to manage their budgets while focusing on studies.
According to recent education reports in India, the average cost of higher education has increased significantly over the past decade, with private college fees in some courses rising by nearly 10–15% annually. Many students in Pune say that this increase is clearly visible, especially in professional courses such as engineering, management, design, and medical studies. Several students mentioned that even semester wise expenses like exam fees, project submissions, lab materials, and online subscriptions now add extra financial pressure.
Coaching classes have become another major concern for students. Many feel that simply attending college is no longer considered enough, especially with growing competition for placements and entrance exams. Students often join additional classes for CET, UPSC, CAT, coding, language skills, or certifications to improve their resumes. While these courses may improve career opportunities, students pointed out that they can be extremely expensive and difficult for everyone to afford equally.
Students also spoke about the pressure education costs place on families. Some said they feel guilty asking parents for extra money for workshops, textbooks, or educational trips. Others mentioned that financial stress sometimes affects concentration and mental wellbeing during exams or placement season. A few students shared that they try to reduce expenses by sharing notes, buying second hand books, or using free online resources whenever possible.
Despite the challenges, many students in Pune continue to work hard toward their goals. Some manage expenses through scholarships, internships, tutoring, or freelance work alongside academics. Students said these experiences teach them independence and financial responsibility, but they also believe education should feel more accessible and less financially overwhelming for young people.
Even today, Pune remains one of India’s most important education hubs because of the opportunities and student culture it offers. However, students believe there should be more focus on making quality education affordable. Many feel that lower academic fees, improved scholarship opportunities, and access to affordable learning resources could help reduce the growing financial burden on students and their families.
