From Fruit Vendor’s Son to Ice Cream Icon: The Inspiring Journey of Raghunandan Srinivas Kamath, Founder of Naturals Ice Cream
Raghunandan Srinivas Kamath’s story is a powerful example of resilience and entrepreneurship.
Naturals Ice Cream, founded by the visionary Raghunandan Srinivas Kamath, transformed the ice cream industry by focusing on natural ingredients and authentic flavors. Kamath, who recently passed away at 75, built Naturals from modest beginnings in Karnataka into a beloved brand with 135 outlets across India. His journey reflects determination and creativity, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire entrepreneurs nationwide.
Starting from humble beginnings in a small Karnataka village, Kamath’s early experiences in his father’s fruit business equipped him with a unique understanding of fruits, knowledge that later became foundational to his ice cream venture.
Despite academic struggles that led him to drop out of school, Kamath’s determination remained unwavering. At 14, he moved to Mumbai and began working in his brother’s South Indian restaurant. This experience ignited his desire to build something of his own. On February 14, 1984, Kamath launched Naturals Ice Cream with just four workers and a simple menu of 12 flavors, crafted with fruits, milk, and sugar, echoing the lessons he learned from his father.
To attract customers initially, Kamath paired his ice cream with Pav Bhaji, a popular local dish. This clever strategy drew crowds to his Juhu shop, generating Rs 5,00,000 in revenue in the first year alone. Recognizing the potential of his venture, Kamath soon shifted his focus solely to ice cream, dedicating himself to refining his product and expanding the business.
By 2020, Naturals Ice Cream had expanded to 135 outlets across India, setting itself apart with a commitment to natural ingredients and the absence of artificial flavors. This approach resonated with customers, earning Naturals a spot in a KPMG survey as one of India’s top 10 companies for best customer experience. With annual revenue reaching around Rs 400 crore in FY 2020, the brand’s success stands as a testament to Kamath’s vision and dedication to quality.
Kamath’s journey from a fruit vendor’s son to the “Ice Cream Man of India” is a beacon of hope, underscoring the power of perseverance, innovation, and staying true to one’s roots. His legacy proves that with hard work and vision, even the most ambitious dreams can become a reality.
