Meet Satyam Kumar, the youngest Indian to crack the IIT JEE exam, whose determination took him from rural Bihar to cutting-edge research in the U.S.

Satyam Kumar, a farmer’s son from Bihar’s Bhojpur district, has made waves as a young academic prodigy, becoming the youngest Indian to crack the IIT-JEE at just 13 years old. His extraordinary achievement not only earned him a place at one of India’s premier engineering institutes but also inspired countless young aspirants across the country.

Satyam first attempted the IIT-JEE, one of India’s most challenging entrance exams, at the age of 12, achieving an All India Rank (AIR) of 8,137. Unsatisfied, he tried again the following year and secured an impressive AIR of 679, breaking the record for the youngest to clear the exam. Previously, this record was held by Sahal Kaushik from Delhi, who cracked the IIT-JEE at 14.

After securing a spot at IIT Kanpur, Satyam enrolled in a dual BTech-MTech degree in Electrical Engineering. His academic journey didn’t end there; Satyam’s thirst for knowledge led him to the U.S., where he pursued a Ph.D. in Brain-Machine Interfaces at the University of Texas at Austin. Now 24, he has specialized in the intersection of machine learning and brain-computer interface research, showcasing his expertise during an internship with Apple.

Satyam’s journey exemplifies how perseverance and dedication can propel anyone, regardless of background, toward extraordinary accomplishments. In a 2013 interview, he voiced his dream to return to Bhojpur someday and share his knowledge with local children, empowering them to realize their own potential. His journey, from a rural village to one of the world’s leading tech firms, continues to inspire a new generation of young Indians to dream big and achieve the impossible.
