When life begins in struggle, dreams can seem distant—but for those who refuse to give up, even the toughest circumstances can spark greatness. Hasmukh Bhai Parekh, born on 10 March 1911 in a modest middle-class family in Surat, Gujarat, understood this all too well. Growing up in a household where financial hardship was a daily reality, he knew early on that determination and hard work would be the keys to a better future.

Even as a child, Hasmukh Bhai did not let poverty define him. By day, he confronted the challenges of life, and by night, he took on part-time jobs to support his education. His relentless dedication earned him a rare opportunity: a scholarship to study Banking & Finance at the London School of Economics (LSE).

Returning to India in 1936, Hasmukh Bhai began his career with the stock-broking firm Harkisandass Lukhmidass, while also sharing his knowledge as a lecturer in Economics at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai for about three years. His early years were a blend of learning, teaching, and gaining hands-on experience in finance—a combination that would later shape his extraordinary vision.

In 1956, he took on a leadership role at ICICI Ltd. (Industrial Credit & Investment Corporation of India) as Deputy General Manager, contributing significantly to India’s industrial and financial development. Over the years, he became a respected figure in the financial world, building the skills, insight, and networks that would enable him to make an even greater impact.

By the time he reached his mid-sixties, Hasmukh Bhai’s most transformative work was yet to come. In 1977, at the age of 66, he founded the Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC)—India’s first specialized housing finance institution. He understood the struggles of middle-class families who worked tirelessly yet could not fulfill the dream of owning a home. For him, a house was more than four walls—it symbolized security, dignity, and hope.

The journey was far from easy. Housing finance was a new concept in India, and gaining people’s trust and raising funds required immense perseverance. But Hasmukh Bhai’s vision, integrity, and commitment to serving others prevailed. Over the years, HDFC helped millions of families achieve the dream of homeownership and became one of India’s most trusted financial institutions.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Hasmukh Bhai Parekh was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1992. He passed away on 18 November 1994, leaving behind a legacy that continues to shape lives across India.
