From ₹500 A Month To Stardom: Sunil Grover’s 30-Year Journey From Struggle To Spotlight
Before becoming a household name through iconic comedy characters like Gutthi and Dr. Mashoor Gulati, actor Sunil Grover spent decades working quietly across theatre, radio and supporting film roles.
Today, audiences applaud almost every character played by Sunil Grover, but his journey to success was far from easy. The actor and comedian, known for unforgettable television characters and powerful film performances, spent nearly three decades building his career before achieving widespread fame.
Born on August 3, 1977, Grover pursued a master’s degree in theatre, which laid the foundation for his acting journey. Early in his career, he worked in multiple creative fields, including radio voice-overs, advertising voice work and television performances, gradually developing his comic timing and acting skills.
Early Break And Struggle Years
Sunil Grover’s talent was first noticed during his college years by veteran satirist and comedian Jaspal Bhatti, who helped introduce him to the entertainment industry.
One of his early appearances was in the film “Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha” (1998). He later played supporting roles in films such as “The Legend of Bhagat Singh” (2002) and “Family: Ties of Blood” (2006).
Despite appearing in several projects, widespread recognition remained elusive during these years.
Grover continued to work steadily, experimenting with different formats including television and comedy.
Television Success And Iconic Characters
A turning point in his career came with television comedy shows. Grover gained popularity through India’s first silent comedy series “Gutur Gu”, which showcased his expressive acting style.
However, he became a household name when he appeared in “Comedy Nights with Kapil”, where his character Gutthi quickly became one of the most loved figures on Indian television.
His popularity grew even further on “The Kapil Sharma Show”, where he portrayed multiple characters including:
Gutthi
Dr. Mashoor Gulati
Rinku Devi
Pidu
These performances made Grover one of the most recognised comedians in the country, with audiences appreciating his unique style, improvisation and comic expressions.
Film Roles And Serious Performances
Alongside television, Grover continued working in films. Over the years he appeared in several notable Hindi movies including “Ghajini,” “Gabbar Is Back,” “Baaghi,” “Pataakha,” “Bharat,” and “Jawan.”
He also surprised viewers with serious performances in digital projects such as the series “Tandav,” proving his versatility beyond comedy.
Career Setbacks And Comebacks
Grover’s journey has also included challenges. After a public disagreement with fellow comedian Kapil Sharma, he left the show that had brought him massive fame.
He later returned to television with “Kanpur Wale Khuranas,” though the show had a short run.
He also suffered from heart attack in 2022 and underwent biopsy but despite setbacks, Grover continued exploring different genres and platforms, gradually strengthening his position in the industry.
After a seven-year fallout, Grover reunited with his long-time co-star Kapil Sharma for The Great Indian Kapil Show, which started streaming on Netflix from 30 March 2024
