‘Gareeb beta’ Video Breaks the Internet, Ignites Fresh Discussion on Respect, Money and Men’s Well-Being
Warmth, love, and respect — these are things most people expect to find within their own families. Yet a recent Instagram video has stirred an emotional storm by showing how fragile these feelings can become when financial stability disappears. Creator director-dayal posted a reel titled “Gareeb beta toh maa-baap ko bhi achha nahi lagta,” and the raw honesty of his experience has pushed thousands to rethink how society treats men who aren’t earning.
Dayal recounts returning home just three days after quitting his job in another city. He remembers how life felt different when he was financially contributing — even small gestures, like his mother offering extra rotis at dinner, made him feel appreciated and included.
That sense of affection seemed to shift, however, once he was no longer providing for the household. He describes a recent moment when he asked for two additional rotis, and his father simply said to his mother, “He’s asking for two more rotis, give them to him.” The indifferent tone left him feeling invisible in the very place he expected emotional comfort.
His heartfelt narration questions a deep societal flaw: Why is a man’s worth often measured solely by his income?
Dayal emphasizes that respect and affection seem to fade the moment a man stops earning.
“If you don’t earn, nobody respects you — not even your family,” he says in the video. “Make money… because without it, nothing else seems to matter.”
The clip triggered a flood of reactions online. Many men shared their own experiences of being judged or emotionally sidelined during financial struggles. The comments ranged from empathy to uncomfortable acknowledgment of a reality many hesitate to speak about.
“This is the truth — a man’s value is always linked to what he provides,” one commenter wrote. Another user echoed the sentiment with Chris Rock’s famous line, “Only women, children and dogs are loved unconditionally. A man is only loved under the condition that he provides something.”
Amid the heavy conversations, many viewers reached out with words of encouragement. “This phase will pass. Keep going,” one supportive message read. Another added, “I’ve started following you today. I’m sure you’ll rise even higher. All the best.”
The viral video has become more than just a trend — it has opened up a heartfelt discussion about the emotional expectations placed on men. How often are they allowed to show vulnerability, especially within their own families?
