Violent clash at Calangute beach raises fresh concerns over tourist safety in Goa

A late-night argument at a popular Goa beach turned violent after shack staff allegedly attacked a group of tourists from Bengaluru with metal rods, leaving several injured and triggering police action.

The incident took place around 10 pm on Tuesday at a beach shack in Calangute, one of Goa’s busiest tourist hubs. According to police, the dispute began over tourists sitting on sunbeds at the shack, which quickly escalated into a physical confrontation.

In his complaint, a businessman from Bengaluru, alleged that two shack employees along with their associates assaulted him and his six friends using beach umbrella rods and metal rods. The group reportedly sustained serious injuries in the attack.

Police have arrested two accused in connection with the incident. Further investigation is underway to identify and take action against others involved.

Officials also revealed that a similar incident had been reported at the same shack last year. Despite prior warnings to follow rules and maintain discipline, the management allegedly failed to comply.

Following the latest incident, the tourism department has temporarily suspended the shack’s licence.

The episode has once again raised concerns over safety standards and regulation enforcement at Goa’s popular beach destinations, especially as tourist footfall continues to rise.
