Google has declared that as of June 4, 2024, the Google Pay app will no longer be available in the US. By transferring all functionality into the Google Wallet platform, the change attempts to streamline Google’s payment options.
The company stated in a blog post that, in addition to other digital goods like transit cards, driver’s licenses, state IDs, and more, Google Wallet remains the main location where customers can safely store payment cards used for tap and pay in stores. Starting on June 4, 2024, the US version of the standalone Google Pay app will no longer be accessible in order to streamline the user experience.
To be clear, the Google Pay app will no longer be available in the US, but it will still be available in other countries like Singapore and India. The company stated that the app will continue to function. As we continue to develop for the particular needs in those countries, nothing will change for the millions of users of the Google Pay app in Singapore and India, Google stated in the blog.
Along with all the other features, users in Singapore and India will be able to send and receive money and pay bills as they do.
Before the June deadline, Google Pay users will need to switch to Google Wallet in order to continue utilizing features like contactless payments in retail establishments.
The blog post states that users can still use Google Wallet to access the most widely used features, such as managing payment methods and tapping to pay in stores.
The Google Pay app will no longer be able to be used to send, receive, or request payments from other people. This is one of the changes that users in the US can expect from the transition. Users won’t be able to handle payment cards or utilize the Google Pay app for in-store tap-and-pay.
The company suggests switching from Google Pay to the Google Wallet app, which includes tap-to-pay, tickets, passes, and virtual debit/credit cards. Through the Google Pay website, users will be able to view account balances and transfer funds to bank accounts. Additionally, users can use Google Search to locate discounts and offers as the Google Pay app will no longer be able to provide them as of right now.
