Experts warn that searching for illegal content or harmful activities online can attract serious legal consequences, including investigation and imprisonment.
Google has long been the first stop for people looking for answers, from everyday questions to complex information. Even with the rise of chatbots and AI tools, millions still rely on search engines for quick guidance.
However, cyber experts and law enforcement agencies caution that not every query is harmless. Certain types of searches can raise red flags, invite monitoring, and in some cases, lead to criminal charges.
According to reports, searching repeatedly for content related to weapons, illegal activities, or exploitation can bring an individual under the radar of security agencies. While curiosity alone is not always criminal, online behaviour is often tracked, and certain searches may be interpreted as intent to commit wrongdoing.
One of the most serious examples is searching for instructions to make weapons or explosives. Queries related to bomb-making or weapon construction are considered high-risk because they can indicate potential threats to public safety. Authorities may investigate such activity under national security laws.
Another strictly punishable offence is searching for child sexual abuse material. Under India’s IT Act 2000 and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, accessing, storing, or attempting to view such content is a grave crime. Violators can face imprisonment and heavy fines.
Cybercrime-related searches are also risky. Looking up ways to hack accounts, steal passwords, or bypass security systems is illegal if done with malicious intent. Such activity may lead to prosecution under cyber laws. Experts also warn that searching for hacking tools can expose users to malware and spyware, making devices vulnerable to real attacks.
Similarly, searching for illegal drugs, narcotics, or prohibited substances can also attract law enforcement attention. Online searches and purchases linked to banned items may be monitored, and repeated attempts could raise suspicion.
Specialists advise internet users to remain cautious and responsible while searching online. While Google is a powerful tool, misuse intentional or accidental can result in serious consequences.
