Government of Maharashtra to support employment opportunities for individuals with different abilities via skill training.
Maharashtra government is planning to boost employment and self-employment opportunities for disabled individuals by offering skill training and Unique Disability ID (UDID) cards over the next five years. This initiative aims to help persons with disabilities achieve financial independence and take advantage of government schemes.
The state is collaborating with ‘Youth for Jobs,’ an organization focused on generating employment for the disabled. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed soon between the government and the NGO, starting with initiatives in Vidarbha and North Maharashtra, with plans for statewide expansion in the future.
This initiative is part of a larger strategy by both central and state governments to enhance employment opportunities through skill development. The Skill Development Department has been established to provide training in employable skills to youth, including those with disabilities.
‘Youth for Jobs,’ founded and led by Meera Shenoy, has previously partnered with the Gadchiroli District Administration and the Central Government to provide training and employment for disabled youth. The organization tailors its training programs according to the specific disabilities of individuals and organizes job fairs to connect these trained individuals with various industries.
Several private sector companies, including Lifestyle International, Aditya Birla Fashion, Reliance Trends, IIFL, Lax Hospital, Milan Coffee House, HPCL, BPCL, and local automobile dealers, have been involved in offering employment opportunities. Furthermore, for those who are unable to take up traditional jobs, self-employment options are being provided to help them integrate into the mainstream economy.
Implementation Across the State and Creation of a Database
A comprehensive database is being created across the state to make sure that all disabled individuals can access government benefits. The registration process for all disabled persons and the issuance of UDID cards is currently in progress. This initiative will be rolled out in phases, beginning with Vidarbha and North Maharashtra, with local district administrations overseeing the efforts.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has highlighted the need for collaboration with NGOs to meet the goals of this initiative. The government is committed to ensuring that disabled individuals throughout Maharashtra have complete access to welfare schemes from both the state and central governments.
