Government to Launch Sahkar Taxi, Aims to Challenge Ola and Uber
Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Aggregator Policy 2025 Draft Receives 160 Suggestions and Objections
March 28: The government is set to introduce Sahkar Taxi, a cooperative-based ride-hailing service designed to empower drivers by eliminating commission cuts imposed by third-party platforms like Ola and Uber.
Announcing the initiative in Lok Sabha, Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that the service would enable cooperative societies to register taxis, rickshaws, two-wheelers, and four-wheelers without intermediaries. The app-based system will function under a cooperative model, ensuring direct profit flow to drivers.
“This is not just a concept; we have worked relentlessly for over three years to bring it to reality,” Shah said. “In a few months, a major cooperative taxi service will be launched, providing financial benefits directly to drivers.”
The initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Sahkar Se Samriddhi’ (Prosperity through Cooperation) and is seen as part of broader reforms in the gig economy sector.
Ola and Uber Face Pricing Controversy
The announcement comes amid growing scrutiny of Ola and Uber over alleged unfair pricing practices. The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) recently issued notices to both companies following reports that fares varied depending on whether a user was booking from an Android or iPhone.
Ola denied the claim, stating, “We have a uniform pricing structure for all customers and do not differentiate based on phone types.” Uber also refuted the allegations, saying, “Our pricing is not influenced by a rider’s phone manufacturer.”
The controversy erupted in December 2024 when a viral post on X (formerly Twitter) showed two phones displaying different fares for the same ride.
Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi termed the practice “unfair”, adding that the government would expand its investigation into pricing policies across food delivery and online ticketing services.
