Govt Plans Monthly Toll Tax Smart Card for Nationwide Rollout
New Delhi: In a significant move to ease toll payments for motorists, the central government is considering introducing a Monthly Toll Tax Smart Card for use across all National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) toll plazas. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has expressed support for the initiative, which aims to simplify transactions and offer discounts to regular commuters and commercial vehicle operators.
Nationwide Smart Card for Seamless Toll Payments
Sources indicate that once implemented, the smart card will be accepted at all toll plazas, providing discounts on toll fees for cardholders. This initiative is expected to benefit frequent travelers and transporters by reducing costs and streamlining payment processes. Reports suggest that Gadkari is pushing for an expedited rollout of the scheme.
The smart card will help commercial vehicle operators, who often travel long distances, by offering them a cost-effective solution for toll payments. Additionally, it is anticipated to ease financial burdens on daily commuters who regularly use expressways.

GNSS-Based Tolling System in the Works
According to a report by News18, the government is also working on implementing a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based toll collection system. This system will replace traditional toll booths by calculating charges based on the actual distance traveled on toll roads.
Officials from the NHAI have stated that the nationwide rollout of GNSS tolling will take time. The system will use an in-vehicle device to monitor travel distance, and frequent travelers will have the option to use the smart card for monthly toll payments. However, it remains unclear how toll charges will be structured for motorists without a monthly pass.
A final announcement on the Monthly Toll Tax Smart Card initiative is expected soon, potentially providing relief to countless commuters and transport businesses across the country.
