The state government issued a government resolution (GR) on Friday to approve funding exceeding Rs 300 crore, to be disbursed in instalments over eight years, for the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) being implemented on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. This system, the first of its kind in Maharashtra, utilizes artificial intelligence and data analytics to optimize vehicle flow and enhance road safety. The advanced technology allows for the automatic detection of various traffic violations, providing a safer and more efficient driving experience for commuters. The Regional Transport Office (RTO) oversees the system from the control room located in Lonavala.

The state has allocated Rs 58 crore for the project in 2024-25, followed by Rs 54 crore for 2025-26, Rs 50 crore for 2026-27, and continuing in this manner. In total, over Rs 300 crore has been approved for the project in instalments until 2031-32, as stated in the GR.

“Concerning the implementation of the ITMS project on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, the funds necessary for the project’s components during the Operations and Maintenance (O and M) period will be sourced from the grants available to the transport department. Additionally, a portion of the tolls collected from vehicle owners will be allocated to the project components as per the contract terms,” the GR further noted.
