Gujarat to issue regulations on smartphone and social media usage for children
The Gujarat government is set to introduce guidelines aimed at curbing smartphone and social media use among schoolchildren to promote better health, academic performance, and physical activity. Education Minister Praful Pansheriya announced on Thursday that the new measures will address the growing concerns over the adverse effects of excessive screen time on children.
The guidelines will emphasize the detrimental impact of excessive screen usage on children’s health. The government seeks to encourage students to engage in outdoor activities and sports rather than spending prolonged hours on mobile phones or social media platforms.
Minister Pansheriya stated, “We had already issued directives to prohibit the use of mobile phones in primary schools. Now, these directives will be strictly enforced after consultation with experts.” He further added that the campaign will involve teachers, students, and parents, ensuring widespread awareness and adherence to the new rules.
As part of this initiative, the education department will provide teachers with strategies to encourage children to focus on reading and outdoor play instead of spending time on electronic devices. Parents have also been urged to limit their own use of social media in front of their children and to actively support the development of healthier habits.
Gujarat is the first state in India to implement such comprehensive measures. The government hopes this move will inspire other states to adopt similar policies. Minister Pansheriya drew comparisons to Australia, where social media access is restricted for children under 16, highlighting global efforts to mitigate the negative effects of excessive screen time.
This initiative underscores the increasing pressure on developing countries to address the challenges posed by technology addiction among youth. Gujarat’s proactive approach is seen as a significant step toward resolving this issue and fostering a healthier environment for children’s development.
