Gujarat Tragedy: Gambhira Bridge Collapse Kills Four, Vehicles Plunge Into Mahisagar River
Ahmedabad, July 9, 2025: A major tragedy struck Gujarat on Wednesday morning when the dilapidated Gambhira Bridge over the Mahisagar River collapsed, sending five vehicles plunging into the swollen waters below. The incident, which occurred around 7:45 am near Mujpur in Padra taluka, has claimed two lives so far and severed a crucial transport link between Central Gujarat and Saurashtra.
According to officials, two trucks, a pickup van, and two other vehicles were on the bridge at the time of the collapse. While three people were rescued alive from the wreckage by villagers and emergency teams, two victims were confirmed dead at the scene.
The Gambhira Bridge connected key districts like Anand and Vadodara and served as a vital artery for transport and commerce in the region. Its collapse has brought traffic to a standstill and disrupted connectivity to Bharuch, Ankleshwar, and Saurashtra.
Local residents revealed that they had repeatedly raised concerns about the poor condition of the decades-old structure and demanded urgent repairs or a replacement. However, their pleas were reportedly ignored, raising questions about administrative negligence.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with police, fire, and disaster response teams working to locate any possible survivors and recover the submerged vehicles. Authorities are also assessing the extent of damage and planning alternate routes to restore connectivity.
