Heavy Rainfall Alert: Red Alert for Ghat Areas of Pune and Satara; Mumbai Under Orange Alert as Rains Disrupt Daily Life
Pune, 16 June: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in isolated pockets of Raigad district and the ghat regions of Pune and Satara, warning of intense downpours over the next 16 hours. An orange alert has been placed for Mumbai and other regions, signaling the need for preparedness amid worsening weather conditions.
Mumbai woke up to persistent showers on Monday, which caused widespread waterlogging in several low-lying areas and led to major disruptions in daily activities. The downpour affected road traffic and led to delays on suburban train routes, especially along the Central and Western lines, where commuters reported delays of 20–30 minutes. Metro services were also briefly affected, with Mumbai Metro One temporarily halting operations due to fallen debris before resuming normal service.
The weather also hit air travel hard. Air India warned that the heavy rain may impact flight schedules to and from Mumbai, while IndiGo Airlines issued a travel advisory for passengers flying through Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), urging them to check their flight status and expect possible delays.
The IMD has predicted continued cloudy conditions and more heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours. In its latest district-level forecast issued on Monday afternoon, the department warned of “heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy rain at isolated locations” in Raigad, Pune Ghats, and Satara Ghats until 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, orange alerts have also been issued for Thane, Palghar, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg in the Konkan region, and parts of Vidarbha including Amravati, Bhandara, Gondia, and Nagpur. These alerts are expected to remain in effect through Tuesday morning.
The red alert issued by IMD calls for immediate action from local authorities, while the orange alert signals a need to stay prepared for possible emergency measures.
The broader Konkan region and several other parts of Maharashtra have been receiving incessant rainfall over the past few days, triggering flood-like conditions in some districts. Overflowing rivers have submerged multiple low-lying areas in towns and villages along their banks.

Since June 1, rain-related incidents across Maharashtra have resulted in 18 deaths and 65 injuries, according to official reports.
The IMD has maintained its orange alert for parts of southern Konkan for the next two to three days, as heavy rainfall continues to pose risks of flooding and further disruptions.
