June 25, 2015, marked the launch of the “Housing for All” initiative under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana (PMAY). Initially set to conclude in 2022, the scheme’s duration has been extended, and it is now divided into two segments: urban and rural. Applicants can apply both online and offline for this scheme. Progress and expansion of the scheme:
Since its inception, the scheme has successfully facilitated the construction of approximately 3.21 crore homes for eligible low-income families. In a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June, a decision was made to build an additional 3 crore homes under this initiative.
Eligibility Criteria for the Prime Minister’s Housing Scheme
- To qualify for the PMAY, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Citizenship: The applicant must be an Indian citizen.
Employment: Applicants should not be employed in a government job.
Taxpayers: Individuals who pay income tax are not eligible for this scheme.
Age: Applicants must be over the age of 18.
Property Ownership: The applicant should not own a house in their name.
Previous Benefits: The applicant should not have previously availed of benefits from this scheme.
- Income Requirements:
For rural applicants, the annual income should not exceed INR 6 lakh.
For urban applicants, the annual income should not exceed INR 18 lakh.
No member of the family should be employed in a government job.
Individuals falling under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category should have an annual income of less than INR 3 lakh.

The scheme is categorized into two types:
1. Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin (PMAY-G): For rural areas.
2. Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban (PMAY-U): For urban areas.
