A resident of Pune’s Bavdhan neighbourhood became a victim of a scam in which a group took advantage of his trust to defraud him out of Rs 23 lakh by pretending to redeem a gift at the airport.

As per further information from the FIR accessed by Pune Pulse, the victim, Kedar Chandrasekhar Mohire, filed a formal complaint with the Hinjawadi Police Station, Pimpri Chinchwad Police, after the deceptive plot developed between November 11, 2023, and December 30, 2023.

Based on Mohire’s account of the fraudulent activities, a case has been filed against 6 accused, identified as Preeti Johnson, Paul Mark, Lakshmi Bhatia, Anup Kumar, Abhijit Mondal and Haroon Rashid.

Mohire, a worker at a Phursungi-based company, initially connected with one of the accused, Preeti Johnson, via a Facebook friend request. Then Johnson messaged Mohire on WhatsApp, saying he was sending him a gift and that they were going to work together on an Indian hospital project. But Mohire quickly found out that this was all a lie when he was forced to pay outrageous fees while pretending to receive the gift at the airport.

The Hinjawadi Police have booked the 6 accused under Sections 419, 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) & Sections 66 (C), 66 (D) of the IT Act. Further investigation is going on.
