Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Metro Nearing Completion; Over Half of Stations Set to Be Operational by April End
Work on Pune Metro’s highly anticipated Line 3 between Hinjawadi and Shivajinagar has reached an advanced stage, with 94 % of the project now complete, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Cooperation Murlidhar Mohol announced on Tuesday. Officials have confirmed that 13 out of the 23 stations along this route are expected to be finished and handed over by the end of April.
The project, originally slated for inauguration this month, has missed its launch target despite directions from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) to adhere to the schedule. Construction teams are now working to wrap up remaining tasks ahead of the next deadline.
Sources familiar with planning say authorities are contemplating a phased commissioning of the line, similar to the strategy used for Metro Lines 1 and 2 (Pimpri‑Chinchwad to Swargate and Vanaz to Ramwadi, respectively). This approach would allow commuters to begin using parts of the route that are ready, while final work continues on unfinished segments.
Last September, the Forum of IT Employees (FITE) had formally requested PMRDA chief Yogesh Mhase to consider opening the Hinjawadi Phase 3 to Baner section (approximately 13 km) ahead of the full 23.3 km corridor. FITE emphasized that significant progress had been made on that stretch and that many daily commuters were in urgent need of metro connectivity. However, the administration maintained that the entire line should be completed before opening it to the public, targeting a March 2026 finish.

Developed by Tata Group’s Pune IT City Metro Rail Ltd (TRIL) in partnership with Siemens, the metro system will be the first in Pune to use 750 V DC third rail technology, eliminating the need for overhead wires. Alstom Metropolis trains, each with three coaches and a capacity of around 1,000 passengers, will operate on this route.
