Hinjewadi Gridlock: Pune IT Employees Urge Maharashtra Government to Mandate Work From Home Amid Rain-Induced Chaos

As relentless rainfall continues to paralyze traffic in Pune’s IT hub, Hinjewadi, the Forum for IT Employees (FITE) has called on the Devendra Fadnavis-led Maharashtra government to implement mandatory work-from-home (WFH) orders for tech professionals in the area.

FITE raised the appeal through a post on X (formerly Twitter), sharing visuals of bumper-to-bumper traffic caused by heavy downpours and widespread waterlogging. The forum’s post read, “If you guys have any care for IT employees, then please declare mandatory work from home for Hinjawadi IT park till rains are over & during rainy seasons.”

The plea has resonated widely across social media, with many users expressing frustration over Pune’s overwhelmed infrastructure. Several users echoed FITE’s demand, stating that the city’s roads and transport systems are ill-equipped to support the growing IT population.

“Pune infrastructure isn’t capable of supporting the IT industry’s lifestyle,” one user wrote. Another described a harrowing three-hour commute, nearly double the usual travel time. “It’s just a waste of time. So much traffic and chaos,” the post said.

Many employees argued that working from home should be a priority, not just for staff well-being but also to maintain client deliverables. “Companies should declare WFH till the rainy season ends. Employees drained in traffic can’t deliver quality service,” a user commented, criticizing companies for overlooking commute struggles.

Some even pointed out the contradiction in how firms praised remote work during the pandemic but now heavily monitor it. “Companies made double profits during COVID. Now they act like WFH is a crime. Some are even using tracking apps tied to salaries and performance,” said another post.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast more heavy rains and strong winds in parts of Maharashtra between May 21 and 24, owing to a developing cyclonic circulation in the east-central Arabian Sea. Rainfall activity is expected to intensify after May 22, with tree falls and vehicle damage already reported across Pune.

As conditions worsen, the demand for mandatory remote work in Hinjewadi gains urgency, with both employees and residents pleading for immediate administrative intervention.
