First phase with 12 stations to open mid-June; full corridor till Shivajinagar by October

Pune’s much-awaited Metro Line 3 connecting Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar is set to begin operations from June 15, offering major relief to lakhs of daily commuters struggling with heavy traffic on this busy corridor.

The project will be rolled out in phases, with services initially starting on 12 stations from the Hinjewadi side. The remaining stretch, including key stations towards Shivajinagar, is expected to become fully operational by October.

Spanning over 23 km, the elevated corridor links Pune’s major IT hub in Hinjewadi with central areas like Shivajinagar, significantly improving connectivity between residential and commercial zones. The route is expected to reduce travel time and ease congestion on one of the city’s most traffic-prone stretches.

Officials confirmed that trial runs across the entire corridor have already been successfully completed, paving the way for the phased launch. The slight delay in opening, originally planned for May-end, was attributed to final readiness checks.

The first phase will include stations such as Megapolis, Quadron Business Park, Infosys Phase 2, Wipro Phase 2, Wakad Chowk, Balewadi Stadium and Ramnagar, among others, covering key employment and residential clusters in Hinjewadi and surrounding areas.

Once the remaining 11 stations are completed by October, the full corridor will connect directly to Shivajinagar, enabling seamless integration with Pune’s existing Metro lines. This will allow easier travel across the city without depending heavily on road transport.

The project holds special significance as India’s first metro developed under a public-private partnership model, executed by Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited, a joint venture between the Tata Group and Siemens. Operations and maintenance will be handled by Keolis for the next 10 years.

While train schedules and fares are yet to be officially announced, authorities are expected to release these details closer to the launch date.

With rapid urban growth in Hinjewadi and increasing pressure on road infrastructure, Metro Line 3 is expected to transform daily commuting, improve travel reliability and provide a much-needed alternative to long, congested road journeys.
