Jabalpur Boat Tragedy: Viral Mother-Child Photo Is Real or Fake, Officials Clarify
Authorities warn against misinformation as Bargi Dam accident leaves 9 dead
Amid widespread social media reactions to the recent boat tragedy in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur, officials have clarified that a viral image showing a mother holding her child is not related to the incident.
The emotional photograph, which has been widely shared online as a scene from the Bargi Dam accident, is being circulated with false claims. Authorities have confirmed that the image is either unrelated or digitally created and has no connection to the tragedy.
The clarification comes as the actual incident at Bargi Dam remains under investigation. The accident occurred when a tourist boat capsized after being caught in sudden adverse weather conditions. Strong winds and rough waters reportedly destabilised the vessel within minutes, leading to chaos onboard.
At least nine people have lost their lives in the incident, while several others were rescued. Survivors have described moments of panic as the situation escalated quickly, leaving little time to respond.
Officials are now examining whether safety protocols were followed, including the decision to operate the boat despite changing weather conditions and the availability of adequate life-saving equipment for passengers.
The viral image, despite being unrelated, gained rapid traction and was even shared by some public figures, contributing to confusion around the tragedy. Authorities have urged people to verify information before sharing such content, especially during sensitive situations involving loss of life.
The incident highlights how quickly misinformation can spread during crises, often overshadowing verified facts and real updates. While the Bargi Dam tragedy is a serious event with real victims and ongoing rescue efforts, officials have stressed that the circulating photo does not depict the incident.
