Vehicle owners can still get high-security registration plates installed, but penalties may apply depending on compliance

The deadline for installing High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on vehicles has officially expired, raising concerns among lakhs of vehicle owners across Maharashtra who are yet to comply. While the cut-off date for mandatory installation was December 31, authorities have clarified that vehicle owners can still install HSRP number plates even after the deadline. However, failure to comply may attract fines and enforcement action.

HSRP plates have been made mandatory to curb vehicle-related crimes, prevent number plate tampering and improve road safety. These plates come with a chromium-based hologram, laser-etched permanent identification number and tamper-proof snap locks, making duplication difficult.

According to officials, the deadline for installation has not been extended. This means that vehicles found without HSRP plates during checks can be penalised under motor vehicle rules. Initially, the fine for not installing an HSRP number plate is around Rs 1,000. In case of repeated violations, the penalty can increase significantly and may go up to Rs 5,000–10,000.

Despite the deadline having lapsed, the facility to install HSRP number plates remains open. Vehicle owners can still book an appointment through authorised portals or approved vendors and get the plates installed by paying the prescribed charges.

The cost of installing HSRP varies depending on the type of vehicle. For two-wheelers, the installation charges range between Rs 531 and Rs 1,325. For three-wheelers such as auto-rickshaws, the cost is around Rs 590. Four-wheelers are charged between Rs 879 and Rs 2,050, while commercial vehicles may have to pay anywhere between Rs 1,345 and Rs 2,060.

Transport authorities have advised vehicle owners not to delay further, as enforcement drives are expected to intensify in the coming days. Vehicles without HSRP plates may be stopped during routine checks, and owners could face fines or legal action.

Officials have also cautioned motorists to avoid unauthorised agents or roadside vendors offering cheaper plates. Only government-approved vendors are permitted to install HSRP plates, and installation through unauthorised sources may lead to further penalties.

In summary, while the HSRP deadline has expired, vehicle owners still have the option to comply. Installing the number plate at the earliest can help avoid fines and ensure adherence to safety regulations.
