IAS Anindita Mitra Unlikely to Rejoin Chandigarh as Punjab Government Denies Centre’s Extension Order
Punjab government denies relieving IAS officer amidst Centre’s delayed extension order.
In an unprecedented bureaucratic development, Punjab’s government has refused to relieve IAS officer Anindita Mitra following a delayed extension order from the Union government, which came a month after her tenure as Commissioner of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation ended. Ms. Mitra, a 2007-batch IAS officer, had already assumed her duties in Punjab after being given a warm farewell on August 22nd by the Chandigarh administration.
The Union government’s decision to extend her tenure by three months created confusion, as the order arrived after Mitra had returned to her parent cadre. With one month of the extension already passed, Punjab has not relieved Mitra from her current duties. The Chandigarh administration, meanwhile, has reportedly shortlisted a new candidate for the commissioner post.
A senior officer from the Chandigarh administration noted, “It is unlikely that Anindita Mitra will rejoin since the Punjab government has not relieved her and the process of appointing a regular commissioner is already in motion.”
This situation highlights the complications caused by bureaucratic delays, as Mitra had already transitioned to her new role in Punjab by the time the Centre issued her extension. The charge of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation commissioner has temporarily been handed to Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner Vinay Pratap Singh.
