Ice Apple Gains Popularity in Pune for Its Cooling, Hydrating, and Health Benefits
Pune: As temperatures rise this summer, Pune residents are increasingly turning to natural remedies to stay cool, with a sharp surge in the demand for Tadgola, popularly known as ice apple. Known for its cooling effect, hydrating properties, and several health benefits, this translucent, jelly-like fruit has become a seasonal favorite across the city.
“I was introduced to ice apple by my nutritionist. It is one of the most refreshing fruits during summer, and it’s rich in iron and potassium,” said Suchi Sinha, a resident of Wanowrie. Apart from being a natural coolant, ice apple is also known to aid digestion, boost immunity, improve skin health, and maintain electrolyte balance in the body.
Pune sources much of its ice apple supply from Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh. Regular consumers swear by its health advantages. “I eagerly wait for the season. Consuming ice apple over the years has helped enhance my skin health and strengthen my immune system,” shared Pradeep Pant from Camp.
Street vendors are witnessing a 20-30% increase in demand compared to previous seasons. Sohail Khan, a vendor in Wakad, noted, “The season began just 15 days ago, and I’ve already sold what I usually sell in a month. Supplies come through trucks from various parts of the country, as there is no organized supply chain.”
Despite the high demand, prices remain stable for now. “We buy ice apples wholesale at Rs 10-15 per piece and sell them retail at around Rs 200 a dozen. Rates are similar to last year, but they could rise if demand continues to grow,” said Satyajit Zende, who purchases around 4-4.5 tonnes of ice apples daily.
Consumers have also become particular about the quality and taste of the fruit. Swati Gupta from Pashan shared, “There are several varieties of ice apples available. The locally grown (‘desi’) ones are sweeter and more flavorful compared to the commercially farmed ones from Andhra Pradesh.”
Vendors like Nadeem Sheikh near Salunkhe Vihar Road observed a gradual price rise over the years. “Three years ago, tadgola sold for Rs 150 a dozen. Now it’s around Rs 200. Prices might go up further if demand keeps increasing,” he said.
Packed with nutrients like potassium, iron, calcium, and antioxidants, ice apple not only helps beat the summer heat but also supports overall well-being. With its natural benefits and growing popularity, the humble tadgola is becoming an essential part of Pune’s summer diet.
