Pune, June 17, 2026: Standing Committee Chairman Shrinath Bhimale has directed the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) administration to urgently prepare a comprehensive master plan for the proposed ‘Lake City’ project covering Jambhulwadi, Pashan and Katraj lakes. The initiative aims to promote lake conservation, environmental protection and the development of quality public amenities for citizens.

Bhimale also instructed officials to expedite the process of transferring Jambhulwadi Lake from the Water Conservation Department to PMC for better management and development.

During a review meeting on the condition of the city’s major lakes, several environmental concerns were highlighted, including increasing pollution, discharge of untreated sewage, the spread of water hyacinth, incidents of fish deaths and inadequate maintenance. Officials expressed concern that these issues are threatening the ecological balance of the lakes.

In view of these challenges, Bhimale directed the administration to prepare an official master plan for the ‘Lake City’ project. He also sought a detailed report on the project’s funding requirements, conditions for implementation under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) findings and a dedicated financial provision for biodiversity conservation.

The administration has been instructed to initiate all necessary government and administrative procedures for transferring the management of Jambhulwadi Lake to PMC at the earliest.

Regarding the recent incidents of large-scale fish deaths in Katraj Lake, officials have been directed to immediately submit water sample analyses and laboratory reports. The administration has also been asked to launch a special drive to address pollution in Pashan Lake caused by water hyacinth, sewage discharge and waste dumping.

Bhimale further ordered the submission of details regarding expenditure incurred on removing water hyacinth, desilting operations and measures taken to prevent sewage inflow, along with the Environment Department’s final report on the fish mortality incidents.
