Ice Meteor Falls in Junnar, Sparking Curiosity Among Villagers
Unusual phenomenon of falling ice chunk or megacryometeor, leaves villagers in awe and raises questions among local authorities.
An unexpected event unfolded in the village of Domewadi near Otur, Junnar Taluka. A large ice ball, believed to be a rare megacryometeor fell from the sky. The massive chunk of ice, weighing an estimated 30 to 40 kilograms, crashed into a soybean field owned by Babaji Wajge at around 12:30 PM on Monday, September 23.
The first to spot the ice ball were field workers who noticed the sizable impact crater it created upon landing. The peculiar sight quickly drew the attention of local children, who eagerly collected pieces of the ice to play with, sparking excitement across the village.
As news of the rare occurrence spread, a crowd of curious villagers gathered to see the remnants of the ice ball. Local authorities, including Revenue Officer Vijay Phalke, Talathi Atul Vibhute, and staff member Sandeep Raut, were notified and arrived on the scene by 2:30 PM to investigate. However, by then, the ice had already melted, leaving only a small puddle and the crater as evidence of its brief presence.
While rare, these falling ice chunks from the atmosphere, known as megacryometeors, have been documented around the world. They are typically formed under unusual atmospheric conditions, but the exact cause of the ice ball’s fall in Domewadi remains unknown.
Officials are considering potential explanations, including unusual weather patterns or atmospheric disturbances. For now, the event has captured the imaginations of the villagers, who continue to speculate about the mysterious ice fall and its origins.
The incident has become a topic of fascination for the local community, with discussions of the rare phenomenon persisting in Otur and nearby areas.
