Maharashtra Govt Directs PMC To Provide Services To Uruli and Phursungi
The Maharashtra government has instructed the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to provide basic infrastructure and services to the newly formed municipal councils of Phursungi and Uruli Devachi until the councils are equipped to manage these responsibilities independently. The formal notification was issued on September 11, following Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s announcement of the new municipal council for the merged villages earlier this year.
Despite the directive, local citizens’ groups, along with BJP leader Ujwal Keskar, have expressed strong opposition to the decision. Keskar argued that the state government should shoulder the financial burden rather than relying on PMC, stating, “There was no need to create a separate council. If the government made this decision, it should allocate ₹300 crore for the development. PMC taxpayers shouldn’t be responsible for funding areas outside their jurisdiction.”
A local citizens’ organization from Uruli and Phursungi is expected to publicly voice their concerns and opposition to the move in a media address on Wednesday.
