IISER Pune Report Reveals How Voter Turnout Determines Victory Margins In Election
Pune: Scientists at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune, have developed a statistical model that reveals a direct link between voter turnout and the margin of victory in elections. The study, titled “Universal Statistics of Competition in Democratic Elections,” highlights that voter participation alone is sufficient to predict the distribution of victory margins.
Led by Professor M.S. Santhanam, the research analyzed data from 581 elections across 34 countries spanning six continents. The team developed a Random Voting Model to simulate voting patterns, and its predictions closely matched actual election results. The study also included an analysis of Indian elections from 1952 to 2019, further validating the model’s findings.
Published in the journal Physical Review Letters, the research underscores how voter behavior shapes election outcomes and how science can safeguard the integrity of democratic processes. The study was supported by the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) and the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, with computational analysis powered by the PARAM Brahma supercomputer.

The model also identified deviations in certain elections, such as those in Ethiopia and Belarus over the last decade, highlighting potential electoral irregularities. Researchers believe this tool could prove valuable in detecting election malpractice globally.
