IIT Bombay Professor Chetan Singh Solanki Wears Torn Socks at 5-Star Hotel, Advocates for Sustainability
In a viral image, IIT Bombay professor Chetan Singh Solanki, also known as the “Solar Man of India” or “Solar Gandhi,” was seen wearing torn socks at a luxury hotel in New Delhi. Solanki, a renowned advocate for solar energy and environmental sustainability, later explained his wardrobe choice, emphasizing his commitment to reducing waste and minimizing his carbon footprint.
The photo was taken while Solanki attended The Economic Times Energy Leadership Summit at the Hyatt in Delhi on September 25. He explained, “Yes, my torn socks were exposed! I can afford to replace them, but nature cannot afford more waste. Everything in nature is finite.”

Solanki, who has been a professor for over 20 years, is on a mission to promote sustainability. He has traveled over 43,000 km across 20 states, spreading awareness about environmental degradation and the importance of solar energy.
In his social media post, he highlighted his efforts to live minimally, maximizing the use of his belongings to reduce environmental impact. He stressed that just as businessmen seek profit, his goal as a “social worker” is to maximize his positive impact on society and the environment.
