Illegal Parking, Encroachments Near Pune Airport Disrupt Passenger Movement; Dr Sudhir Mehta Urges Urgent Action

Pune, June 9: Illegal parking, unauthorized food stalls, and rampant roadside encroachments near the approach roads to Pune International Airport are severely affecting passenger movement and presenting a poor image of the city, warns senior industrialist and former Maratha Chamber of Commerce president, Dr Sudhir Mehta. He has called on civic authorities and traffic police to initiate swift and decisive corrective measures as reported by HT.
Highlighting the growing chaos around the airport, Dr Mehta said, “The moment a passenger exits the airport, they should feel welcomed by a city known for its heritage and innovation. Sadly, the current conditions do not reflect Pune’s reputation. This must be addressed urgently.”
Dr Mehta plans to file a formal complaint with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), the traffic police, and the district administration. He has demanded immediate removal of roadside encroachments and strict action against vehicles parked illegally around the airport premises.
“Improving the travel experience at Pune Airport by ensuring clean, organized surroundings is essential to boosting the city’s global image. A streamlined traffic system will help position Pune more favourably among international visitors,” he said.
He also emphasized the airport’s rapid expansion and growing international connectivity, which is positioning Pune as a key business hub. However, the disorganised airport approach may deter global investors and business travellers.
“Many professionals are still forced to depend on airports in Mumbai due to limited seat availability in Pune. As flight operations increase, it’s crucial that we resolve the traffic bottlenecks now,” Dr Mehta added.
