Nitin Gupta, the Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), has announced that there is a shortage of 10,000 to 12,000 employees in the Income Tax Department, and steps are being taken to fill these vacant positions. 

He also mentioned that as part of the interim budget, there could be relief for taxpayers, with an announcement to withdraw demands for pending taxes up to Rs 25,000. This move is expected to benefit those taxpayers who have received notices regarding tax demands for a period exceeding one year. 

Gupta highlighted the shortage of 10,000 to 12,000 employees in the Income Tax Department, primarily in the Group ‘C’ category, and efforts are underway to address these vacancies. 

The department currently has approximately 55,000 employees.
