New Delhi: In a landmark move towards smart and efficient road transport, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced the nationwide rollout of a satellite-based toll collection system within the next 15 days. The new system will allow commuters to travel up to 20 kilometers toll-free daily on national highways and expressways.

The upcoming tolling mechanism will utilize Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology, marking a significant departure from traditional toll booths and the FASTag model. Under the new system, toll charges will be levied based on the actual distance traveled, rather than fixed toll points.

How It Works

Vehicles will be fitted with GNSS-enabled on-board units (OBUs) or tracking devices. These devices enable real-time satellite monitoring and automatic calculation of toll charges. The payable amount will be directly deducted from a digital wallet linked to the OBU, eliminating the need for stopping at toll plazas.

The contactless system is expected to make toll booths obsolete, easing congestion and travel time. Officials say the GNSS system will enhance efficiency in toll collection, reduce fuel consumption, lower emissions, and improve the overall commuter experience.

Pilot Projects Underway

Pilot runs of the satellite tolling system are currently underway on select stretches of national highways to assess the technology’s accuracy and effectiveness. The initiative is being developed alongside the existing FASTag system but aims to offer an even smoother, automated experience for highway users.

Calling it a milestone in India’s journey toward intelligent transportation, Gadkari highlighted the broader benefits of the project, including environmental sustainability and improved infrastructure management.
