Mumbai: The Indian box office witnessed a significant year in 2024, achieving a gross collection of ₹11,833 crore, marking it as the second-highest earning year after 2023’s record ₹12,226 crore, according to Ormax Media.
Despite this achievement, cinema attendance remained below pre-pandemic levels for the third consecutive year. The Average Ticket Price (ATP) rose marginally by 3%, increasing from ₹130 in 2023 to ₹134 in 2024.
Regional Cinema Insights
- Telugu Cinema: Dominated the domestic box office with collections exceeding ₹2,000 crore for the third consecutive year, despite a 12% decline in audience attendance.
- Malayalam Cinema: Showed remarkable growth, doubling its share to 10% and surpassing ₹1,000 crore for the first time. “Manjummel Boys” became the highest-grossing Malayalam film, earning ₹150 crore.
- Gujarati Cinema: Recorded an impressive 66% growth, making it the second-best performing regional industry after Malayalam.
- Hindi Cinema: Suffered a decline, with revenues dropping from ₹5,380 crore in 2023 to ₹4,679 crore, reducing its market share to 40%.
- Kannada Cinema: Faced challenges, with collections declining by 13% and audience footfalls hitting a decade low.
