Indian Meteorological Department Pune celebrates World Meteorological Day with open day exhibition

Pune: Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) celebrated World Meteorological Day on March 23, 2023, with an open day exhibition for visitors to learn about the organization’s functions and operations. The event was an opportunity for people to understand and participate in IMD’s work and learn from its members.

IMD is a member of the World Meteorological Organization, which was established on March 23, 1950, in Switzerland. The organization operates in various countries, including India, and follows a global system for taking weather and climate observations. The World Meteorological Day celebration marks the anniversary of the organization’s founding.

The theme for this year’s World Meteorological Day was “Future of weather, climate and water across generations.” The goal of the theme was to create awareness about the necessity of preparing for the future and understanding the impact of weather and climate on water resources.

As part of the celebration, IMD arranged an exhibition that displayed modules showcasing how the organization works. The exhibition included models on agricultural and climate applications, instruments used by IMD, and how the models work. Students from schools and colleges, as well as the general public, attended the exhibition, with over 1,000 people in attendance.

Anurag Kashyapi, Head of Weather Forecasting Pune Division, IMD, said, “Climate researchers of IMD have participated in the exhibition and various models on agricultural, climate applications sites, other instruments, how the model works and a questionnaire platform is arranged in the exhibition. Students from schools and colleges and common people have visited the exhibition.”
