With rising EV adoption, setting up a charging station has become a low-barrier, high-potential business, requiring minimal staff, basic approvals, and a growing market.

India’s electric vehicle adoption is accelerating sharply, driving a parallel surge in demand for robust charging infrastructure. By June 2025, EV penetration stood at 7.3% for two-wheelers, 33.4% for passenger three-wheelers (L5 autos), 21.3% for cargo three-wheelers, and 4.5% for four-wheelers.

According to the Ministry of Power, no licence is required to establish an EV charging station in the country. However, a no objection certificate (NOC) must be obtained from the Forest Department and the local Municipal Corporation. This regulatory ease has made the sector attractive for entrepreneurs and investors.

Setting up costs vary widely, from ₹1 lakh for a basic charging point to ₹50 lakh for high-end installations, depending on the type of charger. Standard expenses include the cost of a new electrical connection, civil works, maintenance, advertising, marketing, EVSE management software integration, and site lease or contract. Space requirements range from a minimum of 100 square feet to accommodate vehicle parking and movement, though the charging unit itself occupies as little as 10 square feet.

Manpower needs are minimal, as most modern charging solutions come with integrated equipment, software, and mobile apps, allowing automated payment and billing. Many operators run efficiently with only a few employees on site.

If a 3,000 kW electric charging station is installed and the charge per kilowatt is set at ₹2, operators can potentially earn up to ₹2.25 lakh per month, translating into an annual income close to ₹25 lakh. With India’s EV market on a steep growth curve, charging stations could emerge as one of the most lucrative green businesses in the coming years.
